There is no way the average would be $170K.
Maybe a level 13 could reach that if he worked heaps n heaps of OT?
I used to earn approx $150K, but that was with 600-800 hours of OT a year, shift penalties etc etc. I think my basic pay was less than $100K, cant remember now, and i no longer work at Qantas.
And before you call me gready, i had over 20 yrs experience, 6 airframe licences and 12 engine licences. Yes our salary level is based on our qualifications, something that QF agreed to in 1996.
I can tell you it took a lot of hard work and study to get there.
And again before you again call me greedy, i have worked shift work for nearly 30 years, i am divorced, and my health has been effected by working too much nightshift.
I was offered a job at JHAS after leaving Qantas, they offered me $130K pa, but that was an annualised salary package, everything built in, OT, super etc etc. I didnt take it.
I am now working overseas, earning more than i did at QF, and paying much less tax.
Why? Because the training and experience i received at Qantas is second to none in the Aviation world.
If you think $150K pa is too much, just remember i am certifying that the work i just did on a $200 million dollar aircraft, which is about to take off with 400+ pax, and 100+ tons of fuel. And that work that i just certified will last for the life of the aircraft or component, and was done either in the freezing cold, or boiling heat of day, or in the dead of night when most are asleep.
Good luck to the staff at Qantas, but i fear the are fighting a losing battle.
