Whether or not directors stay or not is up to SH. If the majority feel that they have been let down, i.e. directors have not acted in the best interests of SH, then they can be voted out.
Personally, margin calls are a directors personal responsibility and to a degree not the purview of SH. However, if I found a director had knowingly dealt with a SB who lent shares out for the purposes of shorting the coy, I would vote them out in an instant.
