Climate change panic is a modelling failure. They don't have sufficent data for the past and can't model it with any sort of acuracy, it is too complex. They insert variables and the model says "panic, the water is already over your heads", then they pare back the variables to a scary but not absurd level.
It is taken up by people who believed the new ice age scare of the 70's and people who have (legitimately, i might add) enviromental / green concerns and see value in acting as though it was true, whether or not it is. Bit like religion in that sense.
Overall though, the general vibe of being less profligate with how we generate power is a good idea. A litre of petroleum contains a tremendous amount of power that we largely waste in current ways of utilising it.
Need to be both more efficient and less polluting in the longer term, so that would be a worthwhile outcome.
