Boils down to self interest, I'd say. A Deity who sets a Universe into motion but cares nothing about the fate and fortune of any of the creatures who evolve (individual humans being the articles of our self interest), living out their lives in ignorance of their condition offers no benefit to believers who desire something greater than than that. They want a Creator who will take care of them in this life, they want to made immortal in the 'promised' afterlife, including loved ones in an eternal paradise. Ultimately it is all about self.
