Moorookamick, history informs us that the Chinese are one of the most peaceful nations on Earth but have often suffered at the hands of invaders. The most destructive invasions included those by European colonial powers and the Japanese.

Chinese history in Australia dates to our gold rush era and even boasts replicas of Imperial Shanghai such as that in Darling Harbour, Sydney. Our large cities boast Chinese quarters and thriving business communities.

But Japan's self-serving and ruthless military invasion of China throughout the 1930s was barely questioned and to this day Japan has refused to apologise for the countless scores of millions of Chinese people its troops slaughtered as sub-human.

Yet Tony Abbott declared Japan to be Australia's best friend, Malcolm Turnbull has participated with the USA in sending spy planes over Chinese territorial claims and we even considered getting Japan to build an additional submarine fleet.

Of course we still expect China to source its raw materials from our companies and to cop on the chin being treated the way we treat asylum seekers when they seek to invest in Australia.

IMO gunboat diplomacy of this kind can only head the same way it always has done before!
