I received the JJ vaccine in May - known to be a less effective shot. While impossible say with 100% certainty, I strongly believe my response would have been far worse had I not had the vaccine - because that's the entire point of how they work...
As far as I am concerned, the vaccine worked for me. We know it's not a silver bullet, but it's better having it than not.
The couple was not vaccinated, and yet still decided to go to a group gathering. How that is anything but selfish is hard to argue.
