yep, its a gnu/linux os distro.

yep no problem, you can even read/write your window/dos files (i.e fat32 etc) from debian/linux, you can read NTFS files but I think there may be problems writing to a NTFS file system but this may have changed I haven't used a NTFS for a while.
install openoffice (free) to look at microsoft windows office files, word, excel etc.
debian will also run on other computers, e.g. powerpc (mac), amd64 etc.
