Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.
    [2 Kings 18:13 p1481]

The Hebrew Bible does not detail that Sennacherib (SNXRIB) besieged and destroyed Lachish (LKIS) in 701 BCE, but it seems to have had much to do with the envious Judaeans having tried to steal the metal trade from the Philistines, as the latter had been supplying the Levant with silver, tin, copper and iron for centuries, if not nigh on a millennium. The metal-deficient Assyrians destroyed Israel in order to protect the Philistines and their supply of these metals.

The Hebrew Bible also does not detail that the copper and iron mines in southeast Palestine were exploited by the Philistines from ca.1800-1550 BCE, ca 1175-604 BCE, and then by the Hellenistic Greeks from ca.333 BCE and the Romans from ca.64 BCE. The successive temples of Aphrodite at Askalon and Paphos thus became wealthy beyond belief and the envy of the entire Levant.

However a relief of the Assyrian campaign at Lachish recovered from Nineveh shows the Assyrians having appropriately impaled a number of captives from Lachish, who are presumed to be Jewish usurpers of Lachish.
