I'd say it depends what tech and systems they use. (note I'm definitely not expert here, this is just my understanding so far) If it is an acoustic system the complexity is in picking up the right vibration noise that indicates failure, which is very hard. ultrasound/Acoustic detection hardware is normal enough, the difficulty is combining it with the software sophistication to actually separate the failure noise from the background (I believe), but it appears that what mining3 & AVA have developed is that combination of cost effective hardware and sophisticated anlaysis/interpretation to read results across massive belts with a lot of rollers. Other type of tech is xray - but that's for the belt itself not the roller. Belt is last and most expensive part to fail, roller is first so better to pick up as the roller starts to fail, much easier to deal with that. I saw that ABB state an option that uses ultrasound with a heat camera to pick up failures - a) adding heat camera makes me think their ultrasound not reliable on it's own, but their option also requires a big rail track to run along the belt to hold heat camera and electricity source to run, which I'd say will increase cost a lot and that tends to quickly make it unattractive to mining. Also heat camera still has to run up/down the track taking photos. so not instantaneous.
I'm not aware of mining belts having this style of roller monitoring tech installed on them so far, but interested if anyone has??.
Mining3 has another site published in 2017 that discusses the tech and what they've done and need to do to make work. Worth a read.
