I recently read the Dick Smith book "Population Crisis". Very interesting book. I unfortunately believe that much of what is in this book will come to pass. Depressing really. He makes the point that up until now much of the oil and gas we have at the moment, to quote his metaphor, "is in the easy picking overhanging fruit" category. Oil and gas is rapidly becoming scarcer and more difficult and expensive to extract. Even though he is a staunch opponent of coal he understands its abundance and relative price advantage. Developing economies cannot compete for oil and gas with the developed world. Coal will provide these economies with the energy they need. Like it or not coal is here to stay and like Oscar Wilde its death has been greatly exaggerated. When this Phoenix, coal, will rise from the ashes is of course another matter entirely. Hopefully before slashing my wrists becomes vastly more attractive than it is at the moment. Guarded optimism is still flickering!
