It's not for small caps but i have always found "Fortune" magazine to be spot on with which way the general market is heading.
In a down market the small caps usually have trouble raising funds so in that respect I have found the magazine to be useful.
For example, the magazine told me to sell out of everything in January 2008 (which I did). I waited for the storm to pass and the rewards have paid for the subsrciption many, many times over.
