I remember going to the milkbar at 10 years of age (mid 70s) to buy my mother a pack of Rothmans cigarettes with no problems at all. I think my mates would buy Viscounts, which had maybe less than 20 ciggies, for around 20 cents a pack. Then in 1981, a pie and can of softdrink were 50 cents each. But during the 70s when the Guy Fawkes period came around, the local milkbars would clear out the lolly trays behind the glass windows and load them with a massive array of fireworks - absolutely no restrictions; Catherine wheels, tom thumbs, skyrockets, roman candles, and (sorry, don't know how to spell them) pettybangers that were responsible for numerous severed thumbs, etc, hence the ban on all the fun.
