I think backtesting is very useful and can be highly predictive. I would suggest anyone doing system trading first have a good solid backtest which maintains its performance on unseen data. The big problem with stock trading is slippage which can totally ruin a good system. This would be much less of a problem with high liquidity markets like futs and currency.
