AC88, your thought path is correct, however for me I also see shorts as a part of a hedging strategy. From my experience and also by virtue of having friends within the trading/finance industry, we are told never to have a naked trade. Shorts are very effective to mitigate risks in going heavy long on stocks. It also gives flexibility, to buy and sell on dips and booms. It isn't fool proof but can be effective in capital management.
