Hi, when I first got started with ASX about 5 years ago, that's exactly what I did: 2.5K to VAS, 2.5 to VGS. Why? Well, that was pretty much the consensus around play it safe & small. The comments I got back then were, don't buy too small to avoid brokerage fees eating your gains and, as I was buying and holding (and still holding), don't be too concern about the price.
It worked for me... despite not buying like that anymore, it helped me to get started and gain confidence in investing. Hope that's useful.
