anyone ever rented in london

I'm thinking moving over to London for 6mths to use as a central base to see Europe!Anyone rented near central London?

Will be looking at an apartment no more than 1/2 hour by train to central London-how would I go about looking for one apart from the obvious(the internet)?

And what sought of rent would I looking at paying?

Any tips?
