SPT APPOINTED CORE NETWORK SERVICES PROVIDER TO NSW GOVERNMENT The Minister for Commerce, the Hon John Della Bosca, today announced that Soul Pattinson Telecommunications Pty Limited (SPT) has been appointed Core Network Services Provider under the NSW Government State Broadband Service initiative. SPT, which is a subsidiary of ASX listed S P Telemedia Limited (SOT), will develop a high speed broadband data network which will connect major NSW Government agencies and extend across the state of NSW with network access points (NAPs) in 24 major regional centres as well as two locations in Sydney. This network will partially utilise the current extensive broadband network operated throughout regional NSW by SPT in joint venture with Digital Distribution Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of the WIN Television Group. SPT will further expand the capacity of this network to enable the provision of a wide range of broadband services to all NSW Government agencies. SPT has signed a 5 year contract with the NSW Government to provide a Core Network for the State Broadband Service. This network will involve the provision of 26 NAPs throughout NSW where Government agencies will inter-connect with the SPT Core Network either directly by SPT or through a range of local access providers. The SPT Core Network will provide to NSW Government agencies the opportunity to access an innovative and competitive Broadband Network to meet their current Data Networking and Voice requirements and also enable service improvements and efficiencies. The SPT Core Network will be capable of introducing a wide range of new broadband and multimedia related services, including Voice Over IP, Video Over IP and Multicasting applications, for Government agencies and their clients. Mr Rob Millner, Chairman of SOT, stated “This contract with the NSW Government is a significant milestone in the growth of SPT. It will see an extensive expansion of the telecommunications network operated in NSW, retention of existing NSW Government business and the opportunity to significantly increase the amount of Government business for a wide range of products and services”.
