My theory on tow balls .

There is a wear spot that that makes the trailer travel straight .

A well worn trailer ball will help your trailer track true .

Lubrication will stop that spot wear it has most resistance to friction to not traveling in a straight line ,

You want it hard to turn from that friction force from any uncontrolled wobbling while traveling straight as is most traveling you do .

The ball wear is very minimal over a duration of travel and road trains and anything that travels long distance with load does not use a ball it uses a straight pin that wears into the vehicles characteristics and the driving of distances .

Its only characteristic to balls is well worn balls begin to sag in humans as they age and the tensile strength thats not actually there for the size of them is over rated .

Look next time you pass a trailer hookup on a semi it wont be the size of the ball it will be the strength of the coupling .

Big pin no big ball no .

A well worn hole yes means well worn pin and balls but only the hole has an adjustment for the the ball and pin.

Ie the replacement for a worn pin is the hole and the hole wears out .

Its a fact of life developed into engineering that two balls and a pin are worth more than one hole
