"our capital is guaranteed more or less"

Sorry, but it's definitely "less". Shareholders are right at the back of the queue in the event of a company liquidation. They are not even considered creditors, who must all be paid out before shareholders get a thing.

What we can rightly claim though, is that as one of the four pillar banks operating under the oversight of APRA, and supported by a government-backed guarantee on deposits (up to $250k) through the FCS, the ANZ is a considerably safer investment than most other stocks on the ASX.

But 'safer' is a relative term. If an actual capital guarantee is what you are looking for, then a bank deposit covered by the FCS is about the nearest you will find.
