You'd be amazed at how much banks still rely on paper records. In my line of work (Audit) I end up spending hours on end reviewing them. Sarbanes Oxley legislation a few years back resulted in all sorts of requirements for the retention of physical records and evidence of controls being actioned.
Electronic records can be an even bigger challenge to find anything. Most companies have hard disk and email storage limits, so files and emails end up getting deleted or copied to CD.
