The "government" trend for the last 40 odd years is to pass out bits of "required" paper which rarely equate to quality of the work

In the old days --- (sorry but true) an apprentice would do 4 or 5 years of training
They would also do at the same time 4 or 5 years of schooling

At their job their "trainer/boss" was only allowed to have a max of 2 or 3 apprentices under his control, they had inspectors on the road checking the standards and work they were doing

They were paid on a sliding scale based on the year of their training and in the first year they received so little money that their boss could afford to have them do nothing, just watch and learn, compare that with now where a first year apprentice gets close to full money so has to earn his/her wages from day one, no time to learn

The result was Australia turned out tradesmen that were accepted as top workers anywhere in the world
Naturally not everyone was a crack tradesman but IMHO the percentage was very high

What have we now ? no proper apprenticeship, a TAFE system which is focused on making money not teaching. A system which does not encourage a worker to do any better than he has to in order to keep his/her job, you get paid the same good or bad due to our pitiful wages system

Tradies in Cairns take there time and charge at least $120 an hour for work which a handyman can do.
Because people cannot legally touch electrics or plumbing without the appropriate licence they have us by the balls.
I bought some cheap lights from Bunnings recently. Oyster lights for the ceiling. Easy installation which a sparky quoted $120 each. The lights only cost $35.
I installed them myself
I broke the law.
