The app ranks are not guesstimates nor are they bogus, this is actual information released by the app stores independently to help developers assess the popularity and successful traits of competing apps, all in the name of improving app quality and promoting the evolution of the app market.
The app store and Google Play would be shooting themselves in the foot by releasing false or unverified information to app developers, they are the very hand that feeds them and so cannot afford to allow false readings to direct the advancement of the app market.
There is free access to app ranking data, which only measures rank against competitors, not actual numbers. The actual numbers and more in depth analysis is available for a fee.
Your web traffic data comment may be a very naive one based on conspiracies born out of 1999.
