It's a strange article because it doesn't really say what the questions were that the companies were responding to. I would assume they are being asked about the chemical/thermal processes used (in china?).
Synthetic takes a lot of energy to produce - so one would think it was also polluting or at least contributing to CO2. It is also a costly method of production.
So if natural graphite purified without chemicals passes all the requirements then it is good for everybody. Cleaner, less costly etc.
