2.3.3 Commercialization
BrainChip Ltd. has announced their plan to release their Akida
Neural Processor soon [13]. This NSoC would be one of the first
available for off-the-shelf purchase and has the potential to
accelerate research and development by enabling groups from a
variety of different backgrounds to test their ideas in a spiking
neural network-based platform.

2.3.4 Future Architectures
As described in the previous sections, NSoCs have evolved to
feature large numbers of feature-rich neuron execution cores in
NoC-style architectures. The number of SNN IP cores and the
total number of neurons implemented in these systems have
varied in NSoC implementations over the years. Designs such as
IBM’s TrueNorth focused on including as many neuron SNN IP
cores as possible in their designs, while others like Loihi
prioritized the inclusion of fewer, more complex cores. We cannot
accurately predict how many SNN IP cores or neuron execution
units future NSoC designs will include since this varies with
different architectural design choices; However, we suspect that
similar to mobile SoCs such as Apple’s M1 and Qualcomm’s
Snapdragon 888 which contain neural processor IP cores, we will
begin to see a new wave of mobile SoCs that feature spiking
neural processors IP cores among other IPs. Furthermore, it is
certain that NSoCs will continue to be built with increasingly
small semiconductor fabrication processes, as shown with each
new NSoC announced. We believe mobile SoCs with traditional
neural processors will gradually be replaced by NSoCs with
energy-efficient neuromorphic processors.
