    Spoiler alert …. when I read that book - borrowed from a local London library to devour in a tiny by-the-week Bayswater room that was supposed to be temporary but wasn’t* and came to that bit I was in total disbelief.
    The book had photographs !
    I went back over all of them, and forward too, and in each one he only showed one arm…
    And yesterdaY I looked at some second hand book sites and found several copies for sale : )​
    I’ll buy one I think, so that I can read that story again!​

    *The building was one of those tall rickety London dwellings with stairs that go up and up, and that one was bursting at the seams with the cats owned by the two old landladies who seemed to always be sitting in an alcove under the stairs on the ground floor.
    ’Home’ always smelt like the meat they were always boiling for them in a huge saucepan they had down there on a gas ring.
    In NO WAY did this dish smell anything like I imagine even the most basic cassoulet would
