I suppose because the Tasmanian Government (both sides of politics, in fact) see value in having the company remain afloat so it can continue to employ local people and invest money back into the regional economy. You may have ideological objections to this explanation, but this is the reason why it has become a highly politicized issue and covered extensively in media.
Don't worry too much about it though. The majority (almost 70%) of the Tasmanian Government's budget is federal government handouts sourced from the mainland states anyway. It would be hypocritical of Tasmanians to be indignant about sharing a little of that free money with us.
