Despite the offshore area of Sydney Basin not having been tested for reserves in the past, it is
regarded as a potential source of gas and petroleum. This is due to the number of wells drilled in
the adjacent onshore Sydney Basin from which gas and oil shows have been encountered. The
company, Bounty Oil and Gas NL, has been given approval for offshore drilling within the Basin;
however, drilling has not commenced to date (Hutt, 2007).
