Some cyclists need to to earn that respect though. Not running red lights. Being sensible with cars and not aggressively asserting "rights" such as riding two abreast when it really doesn't suit conditions.
I am fed up with some of the Lycra brigade giving other cyclists a bad name. Most drivers would be hardly aware of me on a bike because I keep a low profile.
