"As Ms Zibelman says, Australia needs a power system that is more flexible, diverse and resilient. This means building more interconnectors. It also means co-ordinating the modernisation of transmission networks with generation to avoid stranding renewables. But it should also mean the introduction of a revenue-neutral carbon tax to drive investment in non-coal-fired peaking generation and other emissions-abating industries, such as hydrogen energy, carbon capture and storage, and nuclear generation. A measured energy policy rethink as part of the practical recovery from the fires would be the rational, least-cost way to tackle climate change, reduce climate risk, and keep the lights on."
