The first planes will be landing at the new Sydney airport in less than 10 years. Construction will start in the next few years and tourism has little to do with it. We here at Western Sydney also travel and we travel a lot for all the same reasons as our Eastern suburb cousins travel and there is a few million of us already and that figure will only grow.
On the domestic side, Sydney Airport is at near capacity with only the international terminal still having room for real growth during certain times of the day when the terminal is not really busy, late afternoons / early evenings for example.
In saying that, Badgery's Creek once built and running will actually be a positive for SYD. It will most likely be run by Sydney Airport Holding and will be an extra stream of revenue for SYD share holders one which will come with no major cap ex from SYD itself as the government will build the airport but will offer SYD the opportunity to operate the airport first. It will really just the an extra runway and terminal (at a different location) for SYD share holders.
