We renegotiated the Timor Gap treaty and gave E Timor 90% of the royalties, even in areas that previously were 50/50 with Indonesia.
Personally I think we should have kept well out of E Timor (without our actions to promote the issue the UN vote would never have happened)
Now E Timor is independent it is a weak and vulnerable state that will destabilize the rest of Indonesia. As well as being a basket case they will always be wanting handouts from us.
