Demonic mockery’: Paris’ opening ceremony act upsets 2.4 billion

The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics has come under heavy fire after one act infuriated viewers around the world.

The ceremony unfolded over four long hours on Saturday (AEST) as the athletes were paraded down the River Seine.

Throughout the extravaganza, dancers and musicians performed along the banks and atop monuments around the area.

But as criticism over the river decision piled up, one act in the middle of it all sparked severe backlash.

After shifting away from the scenes on the river, the broadcast cameras panned out on a table of drag queens with one in the middle wearing some form of crown on her head and standing in front of DJ gear.

On first glance it appeared to be nothing out of the ordinary, but it quickly became evident the display was a recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s mural of Jesus and his Twevle Apostles.

The scene quickly went viral with social media users far and wide unleashing over the decision to “insult” Catholics the world over.

American podcaster Clint Russell wrote: “This is crazy. Opening your event by replacing Jesus and the disciples at the The Last Supper with men in drag. There are 2.4 billion Christians on earth and apparently the Olympics wanted to declare loudly to all of them, right out of the gate: NOT WELCOME.”

Author Matt Walsh added: “The Olympics opens by making a demonic mockery of the Christian faith.”
