Loki, I get my inflation and yield curve data for plotting two of the main macroeconomic drivers of gold, real interest rates and yield spreads here:

I keep track of many other financial charts courtesy of ex-Kitco poster "Trotsky" who works for a hedge fund in Germany and has his own economics blog:

Next step is to work out whether we're in an intermediate peak or trough for gold. This is where the Market Vane sentiment of fund managers and market commentators is important - since 2001 bullish consensus below 60% is buy time, over 90% is profit time. This works very well in conjunction with what the bullion banks and speculators are doing on COMEX. BC below 60% is normally associated the falling open interest and banker short covering.

You have to pay for Market Vane but the futures information is free:

After that it's gold stock sentiment versus bullion - gold/XAU, gold/HUI ratios. During an intermediate peak in the gold price, the stocks outperform bullion. I get the gold price info from Kitco and HUI data here:

After that the hard work begins researching the individual stocks. Oh, and I also rely on Jeff Kern's SKI index. Kern has 26 years experience in the gold market:

Main thing is to have a plan. I'm always asking myself are we in or nearing an intermediate peak in gold. The sentiment data suggests not and the bankers are less short than they were at $US 1200/1300. Are gold stocks overvalued? Err no, most analysts are freaking out about a potential silver collapse/correction taking everything down with it.
