Personally I think as we have less large numbers of people in wars - talking about Western nations here - then I think we probably will become more stupid.
War sorts intelligence out pretty well.
Sure, you lose bright people -- but, you lose a lot more stupid one's. Once you lose them, they can't breed. So the breeders who are left are brighter.
Look at a lot of earlier wars - what do you notice about cannon fodder? Many of them are thick as two short planks.
WW2, who gets killed - someone who is smart enough to keep their head down or someone who is as vague as all get out?
It's a numbers game - yep, we lose many bright ones - but, we sure lose a lot more dumb ones.
It may well be a very ugly way to cull the thick - but, it is effective.
