Malcolm Fraser, the faux liberal, was anti-technology. When Sputik one was launched Fraser got up in parliament and said words (from memory) "this artificial earth satellite will do nobody any good ...". When Fraser was minister for Defence he essentially closed down twelve of the thirteen rocket launch pads at Woomera. Australia was the third country to launch a satellite from it's own territory. After the Fraser wrecking Australia was reduced to using countries such as Canada to launch our satellites.Fraser rescued Whitlam and turned him into a plaster saint. Most of the "Whitlam" legislation was enacted by the Fraser government, not the Whitlam government. Fraser was hated at his school and not made a prefect because everyone knew his grandfather was a crook. That is where the Fraser money came from.
