Banksey, the "millionaire" graffiti artist has done some similar things. Sold some works anonymously for a pittance and later gave the good news to the buyers that they had valuable art.

I think these stories tell us more about our tendency to follow a crowd rather than be individuals. If we [as a group] knew and understood music people would have stopped and admired the music. Do those filling the halls really understand good music? Who knows. If Banksey really is as good as his price tag suggests people would have jumped at his offerings even without a signature. Do art buyers take too much notice of the artist than the art? I admire those who can say "I know nothing about art, but I know what I like".
