Trite stuff to follow but all to quiet on the ESG forum.
I get my morning coffee on the weekends down at the beach. The Spanish barista likes to keep me posted on his next tip for the market's direction. He told me the market's heading down some months ago. He tipped it a few days before the beginning of the slide.
I told him I'm always long and going short isn't my thing.
Recently I've been thinking I should get my coffee at the place next door as this Spanish guy keeps on checking if I'm still long. Then he quotes me the All Ords index. Whatever, just give me the coffee Miguel.
Yesterday he said "4,400 is the bottom my friend", big smile and the inevitable, "are you still long?".
"Yep" I reply with a return smile instead of the more appropriate "f#@$ *%f".
How is this relevant to ESG?
For ESG and some other CSG players, the long game looks far more attractive than the propsects of short term action.
In the long game ESG will fetch a far higher price per gigajoule than ESG will get in the current market or takeover.
In the interim, the media and Hotcopper make sure we maintain a short term view of a long term asset.
ESG is a long term asset that provides far too many short term thrills.
Underlying all this we know ESG is gradually growing and de-risking a huge energy reserve for the long term.
Repeat, long term.
But having said all that, investing in ESG has been like travelling from Sydney to Brisbane on a roller coaster.
The first couple of kilometres was great fun and the adrenaline flowed. In the back of your mind you think there's always a risk the trolley will fly off the tracks. That's the thrill.
Too long on the roller coaster and the thrill turns into fear. As we climb each crest we anticipate the next dip not with excitement, but trepidation.
Read db's posts and you'll be convinced we're already soaring through the air for a crash landing in a Chinese ghost city.
We've reached the bottom of the dip and we'll be clicking up the crest again in the next few months.
We'll be slow up the crest as big Barry's on board with a tentative foot outside the trolley. Julia's substantial caboose is at the rear and she's wrestling Bob Brown for the anchor he's trying to throw out the back.
The best roller coasters are very scary.
