PARIS (Thomson Financial) - French nuclear energy group Areva has won a long-term contract worth more than 1 bln eur to supply uranium enrichment services to South Korean electricity company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co Ltd (KHNP), La Tribune business daily reported.

The deal will be announced today, the newspaper said.

Areva will supply services based on a new uranium enrichment process using centrifuge technology which will be launched in 2009, according to the report.

The new enrichment method uses much less electricity than the existing gas diffusion system, which it will gradually replace, Louis-Francois Durret, head of Areva's enrichment operations, told La Tribune.

Areva's fuel supply business, formerly called Cogema, signed its first enrichment contract with KHNP about 20 years ago, the newspaper said.

The Korean company is the world's fourth-largest nuclear power plant operator, with 20 reactors in use and another eight under construction or at the planning stage, the report added.
