The Unions will support her because it gives them 18 more months at the helm. A change now would likely trigger an election and whilst Rudd might make it less of a wipe-out .. it is still going to be a wipe-out.
There are still several bureaucratic posts and honorary positions that Julia will need to appoint 'friends' to. Much work is still to be done. As long is the nest is well feathered 10 years in the abyss will at least be comfortable.
