GOP's big backers range from the USA's all-powerful gun lobby to Murdoch whereas Howard's beloved Liberals have pretty well burnt their bridges after pandering to the $Greed and whims of wealthiest Australians, extreme right wing nutters, Pentecostals and overseas corporations.
