Betsy DeVos is the Trump appointed US Secretary of education. She makes no secret of the fact that she wants to defund and privatise public education and increase funding for private religious schools.
Usually I deal with the big picture, history, class, capitalism, war to get an understanding of the world but also one can learn a great deal by drilling down into the detail. Betsy DeVos is a billionaire heiress. She is a devotee of neo-Calvinist Dutch theologian and Prime Minister Abraham Kuyper, an ultra-right-wing opponent of the French Revolution. Kuyper responded to the 1903 railway strike by mandating new anti-socialist laws known as “strangling laws,” which forbade striking by public employees and enacted harsh new penalties. Kuyper’s central practical mission, however, was to win state funding for religious schools.
Trump is definitely draining the swamp, by filling it with sewage.

DeVos, intoned, “Pope Leo was right! Government can’t know the needs of individuals better than a parent, a pastor or a friend.” Leo, who held the papacy from 1878-1903, was also known for opposing “freedom of thought, or speech, or writing or worship.”
