From my understanding spaceX are doing things a little different. They're targeting developed countries with high bandwidth capability. Whereas SAS are going for the poorer end of the scale in which a significant proportion of the world don't have access to basic low bandwidth communication. I believe most of us are oblivious to this because it's so readily available.
They're looking to replace 50 satellites per year once full constellation is complete.
