Slother,
I read the term in various media over the years as both being spelled "bail(ed) out" and "bale(d) out".
To this day I do not know which is correct although "bail(ed) out" seems to be the most logical.
That said for the longest time I also thought the expression "on tenterhooks" was actually "on tender hooks".
Then after seeing it written one day I realised that hooks are not tender at all, particularly if you are "one one". Well being on any type of hook, tenter or otherwise would, I suspect, be rather unpleasant.
Somehow it conjurs up the image of Michael Hutchence hanging from a coat hook on the back of a door.....hmmm Silly banker.
