Taking fight to cancer

A PROMISING therapy against pancreatic cancer will trialled in Australia from September.

Patients will have a medical ?device inserted directly into their ?tumours, where it will produce local radiation designed to combat the cancer.

Initial trials of the treatment, developed by Australian biomedical company OncoSil Medical, were encouraging. Of 17 patients injected with the device in Singapore and Britain, almost half were alive without progression of the disease after 18 months and the median survival time was greater than 10 months, with a big ?reduction in pain.

OncoSil Medical chief executive Neil Frazer said such results were “extremely positive’’.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer, with little or no improvement in survival rates over 40 years.

Only 5 to 6 per cent of patients are alive five years after diagnosis. More than 40 Australians die of the disease every week.

“OncoSil is administered in a single dose under light anaesthesia,’’ Dr Fraser said.

Pancreatic cancer patients will be treated at the Royal North Shore, St Vincent’s and Liverpool and Bankstown hospitals in ?Sydney and the Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, and at ?several centres in the US and ?Europe.
