Most of South Africa's - and hence the world's - platinum comes from a geological feature known as the Bushveld Igneous Complex which is located in an area for the most part to the north and west of Johannesburg and Pretoria, thus a major platinum discovery based on a different geological formation tends to attract a good deal of interest.

Platinum Australia's Kalplats exploration project, also in South Africa, is therefore perhaps going to rewrite the book on the world's major platinum occurrences.

Assuming that all the exploration data to date is accurate and gives a fair indication of its potential, Kalplats and the surrounding area looks like being a major platinum resource in its own right. The outlined resource is already substantial by any standards even though it may not contain as much PGM mineralisation as the Bushveld Complex. The latter covers a huge area and is a major igneous intrusion which has been tilted and eroded and now outcrops around what appears to be the edge of a great geological basin. PGM resources for the Bushveld Complex are almost certainly more than 1 billion ounces.
