Australian explorer Ironbark Gold has bigger ideas for Greenland zinc
Ironbark Zinc (ASX: IBG) which was one of the new junior explorers put in a spotlight in Perth mining circles about three four years ago after it had picked up the Greenland project dropped by a Canadian company in an earlier flat period for the zinc price.
Ironbark's share price rose with the zinc price, but it came back with a thud when the metal was one of the main victims of the late 2008 global financial crisis. The share price has been tracking back with the, at times, cautious recovery of the zinc price.
The company's managing director Jonathan Downes the exploration potential of Citronen was now showing scope through geological modelling for between 302-347 millon tonnes of zinc and lead mineralisation.
That, he said, would put Citronen in the "super giant" category as proposed by industry experts Goodfellow and Lydon.
Ironbark confirms exploration target for 302 - 347 million tonnes of zinc and lead mineralisation at Citronen
The target would be between 165-190 million tonnes grading between 5.7% to 6.5% combined zinc and lead for a combined total of up to 26 billion pounds of zinc and lead metal - using a 3.5% zinc cut-off grade.
Using a 2% zinc cut-off the target would be between 302-347 Mt @ 4.4 to 5% zinc + lead for a combined total of up to 36 Bt if zinc and lead metal
Downes said this would represent an increase of 240% over the current resource base for the project.
To push the exploration barrow the company has purchased a fourth diamond drilling rig for drilling in the 2010 field season.
The geological modelling has taken in an area of about 120 square kilometres and does not include the greater exploration area covered by surrounding exploration licenses - a further 2,600 km2 -- of prospective host lithology.
Ironbark already has an indicated JORC resource at Citronen of 102Mt @ 4.7% zinc + lead at a 2% Zn cut-off.
"Ironbark is very well positioned in the global rush to secure strategic base metals, with 100% ownership of a strategic world-class zinc deposit located on the doorsteps of Europe and America", Downes said.
"We are gearing up for the largest field season ever at this project, with the teams secured and equipment en-route to site."
He said the prime focus would be completion of the definitive feasibility study by the end of 2010.
