Flinders Mines says Pilbara project at risk

A mining company says a new federal tax on profits could put at risk its proposed iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Kevin Wills from Flinders Mines, based in South Australia, says the tax might undermine the project.

"We believe that anything which affects the long-term economics of the operation we're going to have to have another close look at all the project's economics," he said.

South Australian Premier Mike Rann has urged mining companies not to panic.

"What's been announced isn't yet a done deal," he said.

"We're going to be given the chance to negotiate so the smart mining companies, rather than whingeing, will actually put in submissions to make this better."
