...who co-authored this paper in 2011 when he was at Uppsala University on a new dye that performs better in solid state DSC's compared to liquid state as a qualitative exploration of differential mechanisms for dyes in the two states.

That paper was amongst 5 upon which this following paper was based - a Masters by Ute Cappel also from Uppsala Uni looking into Solid State DSSC.
Read between the lines for pretty clear layman comprehensible info..not a bad paper for that whereas most of them are publish or perish claptrap...also topical vis-a-vis Dye efforts with Nanyang...

"....The development of solid state alternatives to the liquid electrolyte in DSCs began in order to avoid solvent evaporation or leakage which might occur in liquid electrolyte DSCs. One approach to this problem was to replace organic solvents in the liquid electrolyte by ionic liquids or polymers. The other approach was to completely replace the iodide/tri-iodide redox couple by solid state hole conductors...."

Notwithstanding Dye's encapsulation efforts which do provide an initial commercial solution - but you would have to think now that the gathering effort to focus on solid state processes means that the first truly large scale commercialisation of 3rd gen DSSC on steel will be solid state.

Nevertheless I would still love to see a kick-ass big roof in Shotton with current DSSC technology plastered all over it and air-conditioning plumbers clambering all over it trying to destroy it and 3rd year sparkie apprentices flush with an excited desire to save the planet playing with prototype strip interconnections and engineers scratching their beards optimising inverter algorithms under overcast skies...... (or in Andhra Pradesh and not so overcast...)
