    Taskforce upbeat on nuclear energy
    Saturday Nov 4 05:55 AEDT
Nuclear energy could become a viable industry in Australia within 15 years, according to a federal government taskforce.

The review headed by former Telstra boss Ziggy Switkowski is expected to find the cost of nuclear power will fall over time as more of a global focus is put on the technology.

This will happen as a result of an increase in energy needs and moves to fight atmospheric pollution caused by fossil fuels.

At the same time, the cost of carbon fuels is expected to rise over the next decade as some sort of price signal is implemented to stop global warming, News Limited newspapers report.

That means if the government decided to go ahead with nuclear energy now, "by the time the first reactor was (reliably) delivering electricity, the cost differential would have almost disappeared", a source told News Limited.

Dr Switkowski's report will be released within a fortnight, while a separate report by the International Energy Agency to be released next week is set to lend further support to those backing nuclear energy.

Industry and Resources Minister Ian Macfarlane told News Limited a 15-year time frame for a viable nuclear industry was "very realistic".

Prime Minister John Howard this week said he expected nuclear power would play a role in Australia's energy future.
