BEIJING (Asian Metal) 9 May 08 – As Chinese suppliers almost depleted all their export licenses obtained in the first round of tender, export market of bauxite becomes quiet at present. However, the prices for refractory grade bauxite keep rising in May, due to few spot materials for the moment.

A Hebei-based trader disclosed to Asian Metal that it is difficult for him to get a large volume of bauxite. Having received an enquiry of 2,000t of bauxite sands 0-1mm and 1-3mm 88%min from a foreign consumer, the source offers RMB2,300/t (USD329/t) ex works, addding that they only accept payment in advance.

According to the source, foreign smelters have purchased large quantities of bauxite from China since early March, on hearing of the news that Chinese government may forbid the use of dynamite and shut down burned bauxite smelters in June. Therefore, the enquiries are decreasing gradually.

A Shanxi-based smelter with an output of 10,000tpm of burned bauxite will suspend production in the near future. The source is reluctant to offer for the moment, fearing that they can’t deliver materials in time according to buyers' orders. “Fewer consumers come to Shanxi to buy the materials in large volumes, because they purchased the materials in the past months,” said the source.
